Keyboard language & OS language

Keyboard language options for laptop orders

Start with the exact laptop keyboard and target language. A compatible printed film, permanent legends or a different physical keyboard have different fit, appearance, quantity and setup conditions. Confirm characters, physical layout and system input separately.

Your approval brief

Approve four different meanings of “language”.

A request for a French, German, Spanish or Japanese laptop needs more than a language name. Specify the physical keys, visible characters, software input and menu language independently.

DecisionWhat to sendWhat we confirmWhat to approve
Physical keyboardExact model, country/layout reference, Enter and Shift shapes, number pad and required keys.Available keyboard part or base layout on this platform. The keyboard drawing or available evaluation unit; a film cannot add a missing physical key.
Visible charactersLanguage legends and whether a removable film or permanent marking is required.Film fit or marking process, artwork, quantity and any setup charge.Character positions and readability; check feel and appearance on a physical unit where available.
BacklightingWhether lighting must be visible through the localized characters.Compatibility of the actual keyboard, film or marking process. The agreed lit and unlit result; translated legends do not establish backlight transmission.
Input and displayRequired input mapping, OS display language and requested edition/licence.Supported setup for the selected hardware and edition.A typing test for required characters plus a separate check of menu language.
Packing and repeat orderFilm packed separately or applied if agreed, unit quantities and future layout needs.Packing/inclusion, replacement supply and any material commitment for the project. The final layout, artwork and packing revision before release.

Film stock, fit, language, inclusion, cost and quantity are quoted for the exact model. S18D is currently bulk-only with no evaluation samples.

At a glance

What ships as standard, and what is a choice.

Two separate things decide whether a keyboard feels local: what is printed on the keys, and where the keys physically are. The list below covers both.

Standard base keyboard
US English; key count and layout vary by model
Film languages
English (US), German, Italian, French, Spanish
How the film ships
Packed with the unit or applied only as agreed in the quotation
Japanese (JIS)
Subject to model-specific confirmation
ISO physical layout
Model-dependent - confirmed per model
Operating system
Edition, hardware compatibility, display language and licence confirmed per build

Three routes

Film, printed keycaps, or a different keyboard.

The cheapest route depends on volume and on how much the market cares about the physical layout, not only the legends.

RouteBest forToolingTimingPhysical layout
Printed keyboard filmLow and mid volume - the usual answerFilm fit, stock and any artwork or printing setup are confirmed for the exact keyboard and language.Included, packed separately or applied only as agreed; preparation confirmed in the quotationUnchanged. The keyboard underneath stays exactly as it was.
Printed keycap setVolume orders, where the tooling is absorbedPrinting or engraving setup, keycap sourcing and any tooling are confirmed for the exact platform and process.Production lead timeThe caps that are printed change; the layout does not.
Localized keyboard moduleMarkets where the physical layout itself has to be localRequires a different keyboard part, so availability depends on the platform.Production lead timePhysical layout must match the approved keyboard drawing; ISO or JIS availability is not established on every model.

Quantity depends on the route. Keyboard film, permanent legends and a different physical module have separate availability, setup costs and minimum quantities. Confirm these against the exact model and language before ordering.

The limit worth knowing

A film changes the legends, not the layout.

This is the part buyers most often discover after the goods have shipped, so we would rather state it up front.

What the film does

  • Prints the right characters on the keys, in the language you asked for.
  • Works with the operating system. Once the keyboard layout is set to German, French, Italian or Spanish in Windows, the keys produce the correct characters. The film shows which key is which.
  • Packing is agreed with the order. Confirm whether the compatible film is included, packed separately or applied as part of the approved scope.

What it does not do

  • It does not change the key positions. The keyboard underneath stays US English.
  • Check the actual laptop keyboard drawing. Key count, number pad and key shapes vary by platform; desktop keyboard key counts do not describe every laptop.
  • Legends do not establish a physical ISO layout. Confirm the Enter shape, left Shift and required language keys on the exact model. A film cannot add a physical key or change its shape.
  • Japanese JIS is too different for a film and needs a different keyboard module.

If a native physical layout is essential, say so before choosing the model. Send a layout reference showing Enter and Shift shapes, required keys and number pad. Feasibility, a compatible keyboard/C-cover assembly, quantity, preparation and price must be confirmed before the physical option is offered.

Printed keyboard films for German, Italian, French and Spanish layouts, packed with a laptop order
Films for the four standard layouts German, Italian and French are visible here, with Spanish below. These are examples; fit, inclusion and packing are confirmed for the exact order.

Operating system language

Confirm input, display language and edition separately.

Specify the requested operating-system edition, display language, input mapping and licensing arrangement. Hardware and driver compatibility are checked for the selected build; installation does not by itself establish an activation entitlement.

Input method and display language are different things

  • Input method decides which character a key produces. Confirm the required keyboard mapping and test the characters used by the target market.
  • Display language decides the language of menus, dialogs and system text. It needs a language pack.
  • A machine can type German while its menus stay English, and the other way round. If a buyer asks about "language", it is worth knowing which of the two they mean.

What to confirm before you order

  • Check edition support first. Available display-language changes depend on the installed edition and supported language options.
  • The exception is the edition, not the language. Windows 11 Home Single Language supports only one language and additional languages cannot be installed. If the market needs a language switch, confirm the edition.
  • If the machine must arrive already in the target language, raise it at quoting stage so the image can be confirmed for the order.

Microsoft distinguishes input layout from display language, and Single Language editions support only one display language. Check the requested edition before approval. Microsoft language and input guidance · Edition restrictions.

Before you order

Five things to tell us.

With these five answers we can quote the keyboard correctly the first time, without a round of revisions.

  1. The destination market and the languageSo we can tell you whether it is one of the standard film languages or a quoted-on-request language.
  2. Whether the physical layout mattersIf ANSI is acceptable, a film is usually enough. If the market expects ISO, we confirm what the specific model can take.
  3. Where the film should bePacked inside the machine so the customer applies it, or discussed as part of the order specification.
  4. Whether the machine ships in the target languageOr whether the customer will switch the display language themselves.
  5. The quantity and the platformVolume decides whether keycap printing starts to make sense, and the model decides which physical keyboards are available.

Buyer questions

Keyboard localization: eight approval questions.

Which keyboard languages do you support?

US English is the reference base on the illustrated models. German, Italian, French and Spanish films are part of the documented programme, but stock and fit must be checked for the exact keyboard. Other languages and physical ISO or JIS options need platform-specific confirmation.

Can we localize a keyboard for a smaller order?

A compatible film may suit a smaller order after checking stock, language, physical fit and packing scope. A native localized keyboard or matching keyboard/C-cover assembly is a separate model-specific project, with its own minimum quantity, material commitment, cost and preparation. It is not established by changing the system language or printing legends.

Is a film as good as a printed keycap set?

A film and permanent keycap legends can both display translated characters, but they need separate evaluation for feel, appearance, durability and backlight visibility. Neither a film nor reprinting alone changes the physical key positions or turns an ANSI keyboard into an ISO keyboard.

Can you supply a true ISO or Japanese JIS keyboard?

Send the exact model, language and physical layout reference. We review whether a compatible keyboard or matching keyboard/C-cover assembly can be supplied, then confirm feasibility, quantity, price, preparation and approval evidence. Do not assume a standard US keyboard can be converted to ISO or JIS by a film or later keycap change.

How does the customer change the display language on a Windows 11 machine?

Confirm the installed Windows edition and supported display-language options before ordering. A Single Language edition supports only one display language. If the device must arrive in the target language, include that requirement in the approved system image; keyboard input is a separate setting.

What is the difference between an input method and a display language?

An input method decides which character a key produces; a display language decides the language of menus, dialogs and system text. They are separate settings. A customer can type German on a machine whose menus are still English, and the reverse is also possible.

Is the keyboard film included, or charged separately?

Film inclusion, packing or application, price and any separate language or setup charge are confirmed in the quotation for the selected model. The presence of an example image does not establish inclusion for every order.

Will localized characters remain visible with keyboard backlighting?

That depends on the actual keyboard and film or marking process. Specify the required backlit appearance and approve the lit and unlit result on a physical unit where available. Translated legends alone do not guarantee light transmission or readability.

Send five items for a keyboard quotation

1. Exact model and quantity: [model / first batch / repeat expectation] 2. Physical layout: [US base accepted or native layout required / reference photo or drawing] 3. Characters and method: [film / permanent legends / matching localized keyboard assembly] 4. Backlight and system: [lit and unlit appearance / input mapping / OS display language and edition] 5. Approval and packing: [drawing, photos or available evaluation unit / inclusion / required date]

Ask for a model-specific quotation before committing to localization. A quoted native keyboard assembly is a different route from adding a film to US stock. S18D is bulk-only with no evaluation samples. You can include this checklist in the purchasing brief.

Next step

Tell us the market and the model, and we will confirm the keyboard.

Send the destination country, the language you need and the platform you are quoting. We will come back with which route applies, whether the language is standard or quoted separately, and how the film will ship.
