Cost

Where the money in a custom laptop programme actually goes

Buyers usually ask for a price before they ask what the price is made of. The order matters, so this page starts with the second question. We publish no price list, and this is why.

A custom laptop quotation combines the hardware configuration, any one-time setup charges and order-dependent costs such as packaging, document review and freight. Some setup costs can be spread across the batch; component prices, quantity and the requested scope also affect the unit price. Standard custom programmes generally start at 1,000 units per model. A batch of around 100 units requires a separate feasibility and cost review.

Three depths of customisation, three cost profiles

Cost depends on the selected platform, branding method, localisation and validation required. Start with supported changes on an existing model, then confirm any setup charges and lead time.

Outside our current scope

Bespoke enclosure tooling and a motherboard designed solely for one buyer are outside the existing-platform programmes described here. We confirm supported changes before quotation.

Ask the quotation to distinguish hardware, one-time setup charges, recurring order costs and freight. Confirm what is included, excluded or still awaiting review before payment. The customisation page sets out what falls into each one, and packaging and shipping marks are produced to the approved artwork as one of the quality checkpoints.

Why volume changes the number

Supported customisation can require engineering review, boot-logo validation, artwork approval, packaging setup and document checks. Where a one-time charge applies, more units can share it. Hardware prices, material minimums, available stock and order scope still need to be reviewed separately.

  • At 1,000 units per model the standard custom programme can be reviewed against its full scope. This quantity does not automatically include every branding, keyboard or packaging option.
  • At around 100 units a first batch may be possible after review of the model, stock, capacity and requested changes. Available customisation and setup charges must be confirmed.
  • At one unit a standard-stock sample and a customised sample follow different cost routes. Sample price, supported changes, preparation time and any later credit are confirmed before payment.
  • What does not change with volume is documentation. The compliance set depends on the model and the destination market, not on how many units you take.

A larger batch can reduce the setup cost per unit, but it does not guarantee a lower overall quotation when specifications, component prices or shipping terms change. The OEM and ODM programmes separate fast stock supply, branded channel programmes and specification-led projects so you can start at the right cost, quantity and timing.

Why we do not publish a price list

We do not publish a price list, and it is not to be vague. Configuration, keyboard language, packaging and volume all move the number, so two orders of the same size can differ in platform, memory, storage and documentation. A published figure would be wrong for almost everyone who read it, and being wrong early is worse than being slow.

  • Pricing is quoted per configuration and volume. A small order and a large one cannot share one published figure.
  • Custom branding programmes are quoted against your target quantity, so the figure matches the scope you approved.
  • Parts and accessories are quoted against the platform you actually hold, so the part number matches the revision.
  • Ask for a landed cost, not a unit price. Duty, freight and insurance are then visible before you commit rather than after the invoice arrives.
  • On a reorder, money you already spent can carry over. Documentation, artwork and packaging elements that can be reused are identified deliberately, so you are not rebuilding collateral you already paid for. The supply continuity page covers how that is held.

How the number gets built

Market, specification, quantity and target price

Target price and timing are inputs we work with, not something held back until the end.

Engineering review and quotation

Configuration, customisation scope, tooling or artwork cost where it applies, and a lead time.

Sample

The sample configuration, price and preparation time are confirmed before payment. Any credit toward a production order is stated in the quotation.

Proforma invoice

Commercial terms, unit price and schedule confirmed in writing before production is booked.

The sample page covers that stage in full, and the market compliance page covers what the document set depends on.

Cost questions

  • Why can you not just send me a price?

Because configuration, keyboard language, packaging and volume all move the number. We quote per requirement so the figure you receive matches the product you actually asked for rather than an average.

  • What is included in a quotation?

Configuration, customisation scope, tooling or artwork cost where it applies, and a lead time. The compliance document set for your destination market is agreed during quotation rather than assumed.

  • Is the sample charged on top?

Sample price depends on the configuration and requested changes. We confirm it before payment, together with any agreed credit toward a later production order.

  • What pushes the cost up most?

The chosen platform, processor, memory, storage, keyboard method, branding, packaging and order volume all affect cost. Changes outside a platform can require selecting another existing model. Custom enclosure tooling is not offered.

  • Do I pay for tooling?

Any platform-supported branding or keyboard setup charge is quoted before approval. Printed keyboard overlays and permanent legends have different costs, minimum quantities and lead times; availability depends on the model and language. Custom enclosure tooling is not offered.

  • Does a larger order always mean a lower unit cost?

One-time setup costs can be spread across more units, but hardware configuration, component prices, customisation and freight also affect the total. Standard custom programmes generally start at 1,000 units per model. We quote the actual scope rather than promising a blanket discount.

  • What happens to the cost on a reorder?

Approved artwork and other reusable elements may carry over if they remain suitable. Each reorder still needs a current availability and price check. The model-specific supply window and any component changes or renewed validation must be confirmed in writing; there is no blanket 24-month platform guarantee.

  • Will you give me a landed cost?

Yes. We would rather you had a landed-cost calculation than a unit price, so duty, freight and insurance are visible before you commit rather than after the invoice arrives. See shipping and delivery.

Tell us the scope and we will quote the scope

Send the target market, the specification, the expected quantity and your target price. We will confirm feasibility, set out the customisation scope and return a lead time with the cost. If you are still choosing how far to customise, the private label programme and the minimum order page cover the two most common starting points, and the sourcing guide covers what to verify before you pay a deposit.
